where Superstition Mountains
the hike     To get to our destination, we will take the Siphon Draw Trail that starts in Lost Dutchman State Park. At the end of the trail, we will scramble up a steep rock face and gain almost 3,000 feet to the Flatiron (at 4,861') for great views of the Valley of the Sun. The last 0.9 mile climb up towards the Flatiron will be tough and we will take our time. As our reward for making it, we will have lunch at the top while we enjoy the views. We’ll walk back to the trailhead the way we came.
Siphon Draw Trail weaves its way to the summit of Flatiron, a flat-topped wedge of rock protruding westward from the Superstition Mountains. From Lost Dutchman State Park, you will make your way across the gravelly trail for 1.6 miles of gentle uphill incline. At trail’s end, the path turns to stone. You will climb hand over foot, as you tackle the boulder-infested gully that is Siphon Draw. There is no real trail here, although there are several white arrows pointing the way up.
The last few hundred feet of Siphon Draw were the steepest, hardest, and most exhausting. Using tree trunks, branches, and hopefully not a prickly pear, you can pull and tug your way up the final six-foot ledge to the top. There’s a dizzying drop as you peer off Flatiron’s side. This extreme height must do something to hikers’ heads. Wear heavy clothing because, yes, you will use the seat of your pants. A pair of gloves will help to grip boulders and prevent scratches.
