| the hike |
The club has done this hike once before, led by Scott Green. This trail is part of
passage 26 of the Arizona Trail and is also part of the Highline Trail. Given the
challenge of placing cars for a car shuttle, I plan to do a key swap. Hopefully we
will get enough hikers to make that work. If not we can always to a car shuttle.
We will caravan from Payson via Houston Mesa Road (FR 199) to the intersection
with FR 64 (Control Road). From there, half the group drives north on FR 32 to
Washington Park and the other half drives west on FR 64 to FR 440 to reach the
Camp Geronimo Trailhead.
The hike stays below the Rim between elevations 5400 and 6250 but there are lots of ups and downs along the way. After the hike we can reconvene at the junction of FR 64 and FR 199 to get drivers and passengers back into the cars they drove up in. We can then journey back to Payson for eats and drinks. This hike is described on pages 22-24 of Day Hikes and Trail Rides in Payson’s Rim Country by Roger and Ethel Freeman, Gem Guides, 2005. Required: • Sturdy hiking boots • At least 3 liters of water • Rain poncho • Hat, sunblock, sunglasses Recommended: • Lunch or snacks • Camera • Small flashlight |
