Geronimo Head Mt Day Hike Superstitions Febuary 5, 2023 by Bruce Wilczynski |
On a beautiful but breezy morning 10 hikers met at the upper parking area of Tortilla Flat for a hike to the peak of Geronimo Head. We hiked about a half mile to a trail junction for Peter's Canyon of Fragile arch. We found a discarded signpost there that we reposted.
After taking the 1 mile trail up by Fragile Arch we proceeded toward Geronimo. Bruce, the leader, got off trail for a bit but during our wander we saw a couple arches and unusual rock formations.
The trail into the ravine below Geronimo was a bit slippery. We took the rocky ravine up until the brush got thick then started our bushwhack climb to the Geronimo Head ridgeline.
Once there we marvelled at the views of Battleship Mt. and the trails below us. We took the ridgeline over to the peak of Geronimo head and were greeted by a large bald eagle flying by us as we reached the peak.
The views were absolutely stunning as we sat having lunch. We took a different route going back by curving around to a slope which led us to the original ravine. The hike down was a bushwhack all of the way. Once in the ravine we returned down to the way we started the hike.
Total time was 6.5 hours. 5.85 miles and 2,192 feet of elevation gain. The hike was rated as a B+ but some hikers suggested it should have been an A-.
