where Goldfield Mountains
the hike     You’ll see more than fool’s gold on this hike! The lithic tuff of Hat Top Hill and hill 2726 shines bright golden at midday, with iridescent tones in the early morning or late afternoon sunlight. Along the way are picture postcard views of the high peaks of the Goldfields, the towering Superstitions, and the western mining and ranching country.

meet 8:00 AM at Red Mountain Park located at 7745 E. Brown Rd. in Mesa (south side of Brown Road east of Power Road).
Directions from the Red Mountain Freeway (Loop 202):
•  Exit 26 (Brown Road).
Go west on Brown a half mile to the light at Sterling Dr.
Turn left (south) at Sterling into the park. Then take the first left into the Palo Brea parking lot.

•  Take Brown Road east to the Apache Trail highway, Arizona 88.
Turn left and go northeast on the Apache Trail highway to Hackamore Road, which is marked by the prospector’s statue.
Turn left and go north 1.6 miles to Hackamore Trailhead, where the road is blocked.
The north half of Hackamore Road is rough.
