where Mogollon Rim
the hike     This hike is in the upper portion of the Mogollon Rim not too far from Strawberry, AZ beginning on forest service road FR 142. We will begin a rapid descent past a large ponderosa pine located in the middle of FR 142. Bark Juniper, Gambel Oak, and New Mexico Locust will immediately be spotted. During one early morning hike, a family of Javelina were immediately spotted close to the starting point. However, wild turkey, elk, and antelope are also in proximity. We will hike past FR 9267J on our left, past Clover Spring in Meadow Canyon, to New Tank, a watering hole for cattle and wildlife filled with a significant percentage of Smart Weed (has a minty smell when closely encountered). At the 2-mile junction Calloway Butte can be spotted to our right where we will hike past FR 142A on our left. Views of the Bradshaws, San Francisco Peaks, and the White Mountains will be to our right. In addition remnants of the Reservoir Fire (started in Pine, AZ by a careless camper during early summer) are present to the left.
At the 3- mile junction we will make a left onto 142B hiking into Wilbur Canyon that is followed by another left at the intersection of FR 142B and FR9365F. The group will continue to an overlook in the West Clear Creek Wilderness area where portions of the Calloway Trail can be seen. We will stop for lunch. We will turn around and hike back towards the car hoping to see wildflowers such as Prairie Clover, Globe Mallow, Goldeneye, Red Hat Buckwheat, Penstemon, and others spotted in late September.
Please bring raingear with you, since this is the last of monsoon season and intermittent rain showers are a very real possibility.
Pace: Moderate pace. This hike is rocky in sections where hiking boots and sticks are highly recommended in addition to layered clothing because the conditions can be very windy. If you require a fast paced, highly aerobic workout, where your main goal is to get back to the car, this is not the hike for you!
