This hike is high on the shoulders of the Four Peaks.
It is on the Four Peaks Trail#130, heading south toward Roosevelt Lake.
We start at 5600' elevation on the edge of the pine and fir forest.
The road up to the trailhead has passed a few crested saguaros, which we
stopped to take a few pictures of.
The morning is cool so some of us start out wearing jackets.
This tails is rarely used so there are downed trees that we have to walk
around and over.

Shake Spring
Peaks 2, 3, and 4 are plenty rugged.
Our first stop is Shake Spring, which is running.
Shake Spring runs most of the time; it is dry some time in late
summer before the monsoon arrives.
We are probably 2 weeks early for the changing of the colors.
Only some of the leaves have changed to gold and red.
This trail connects to a few trails:
Amethyst Trail which goes to the Amethyst mine,
Oak Flats Trail which goes to an old camping area,
and Alder Trail which goes to a nice view point.
We decide to have lunch at the junction of Four Peaks and Adler.
This is a nice spot with rock and tree trunks to sit on.
This is also a good spot to rest before going on the Alder trail up to
the viewing spot.
There is a 400 foot rise in a half mile to get there.
Some of the group decide to go up Alder, which is a major bushwhacking
operation, while others just decide to head back to the trucks.

Friendly tarantulas join us on the trail.

It doesn’t get much better than this! [by Eileen]

On both the hike in and out we pass many tarantulas which are
also out for a hike.
This is a nice hike, being on the east side of the Four Peaks.
You can get sun in the morning, but in the afternoon you are in the
shade of the mountains. We all have a fun hike.
