On an unusually warm February Monday, 7 Trailblazers gathered at Butcher Jones Beach to
kayak Saguaro Lake to Saguaro Cove beaches. Welcome Ash on his first kayak with the
Trailblazers in his sleek black Oru kayak. A little wind early increased quickly as
we rounded Shiprock bend, making for a good workout with lots of choppy water and some
whitecaps building.

We pulled into the beach at Saguaro Cove, the water was up higher than usual making
for a shallow beach landing. As the temperature was 86
we found some shade under mesquite trees out of the wind. This time of year we
usually sit in the sun for warmth! We assisted each other getting back in our kayaks
and pushing off as the wind was blowing directly into the cove pushing us against
the beach.
Highlights of the day:
Bighorn Ram on cliffs seemingly posing for photos near Elephants Head rock.
Bald Eagles flying overhead
Snowy Egrets basking in the cattail reeds
Professional waterski racing team training in the lake at high speed
Blue Herons fishing along the rocky shore
The usual assortment of Grebes, Cormorants, Turkey Vultures and ducks.

Butcher Jones Cove was packed with kayakers, paddleboarders, swimmers, sunbathers, dogs
and families playing in water as we came back in the afternoon.
