where Superstition Wilderness
the hike The Reavis Ranch Trail is a total of 18.6 miles round trip and terminates at the old Reavis Ranch House, located in one of the most scenic parts of the Superstitions. Today, however, we will only be covering a portion of the historic Reavis Trail — from the Reavis Trailhead to the Castle Dome/Windy Pass area. The trail ascends gently along a ridgeline with terrific views of Apache Lake, Four Peaks, and the Mazatzal Wilderness Area. After four miles we will skirt around the east face of Castle Dome (El. 5,308 feet), cloaked in thick stands of juniper, oak, and pinyon pine. South of the dome we will cross a small saddle before reaching our turn-around point at Windy Pass. This will be the highest point on the trail, at an elevation of 5,100', where we will take a lunch break and enjoy panoramic views of the western Superstitions, including Weaver’s Needle and Fish Creek Canyon.

•  East on the Superstition Freeway to the Idaho Road exit in Apache Junction.
Turn left (north) onto Idaho Road and drive for about three miles to the junction with State Highway 88 (the Apache Trail).
Turn right here and follow the signs to Canyon Lake and continue on Highway 88 for another 25 miles. Shortly after Tortilla Flat the pavement runs out, but the dirt road is well maintained.
Half a mile past the Highway Dept. Maintenance Yard, turn right on Forest Road 212 (Reavis Ranch Road) and drive three more miles to the road’s end at the Reavis Trailhead.
Please Note: High clearance vehicles with 4WD are required for several badly eroded sections of FR 212. Depending on how many sign up for this hike, we may need at least two and possibly three such vehicles.
