the hikes     Let's try and see some Southern Arizona color and maybe drink some wine as well.
We will leave Phoenix Sunday morning at 7 AM (meet at Einsteins on 48th in Ahwatukee).
Head South and start with a leisurely 8 mile hike along the San Pedro River, between San Pedro House and Hereford Bridge. We can split the group to start on either end or do a car shuttle.
We will then go to Sierra Vista for the night at an Airbnb rental and possibly venture out for some wine tasting in Sonoita or a walk around Parker Canyon Lake.
On November 8th , we will get an early start to get parking at the Ramsey Canyon Preserve.
Do either an in and out hike using the Hamburg and Pat Scott Canyon Trails for 9 miles, or add 2 miles on the Crest Trail to make an 11 mile lollipop with over 3000 ft of elevation gain.
This will be an exploratory trip for us. Ramsey Canyon is famous for its displays of fall colors. You have to get there early to find parking on a weekday.
According to the Nature Conservancy, the San Pedro River runs 175 miles from Sonora, Mexico, to meet the Gila River near Winkelman, Arizona. The portion of the San Pedro we will be visiting is home to 84 mammal species, 41 reptile and amphibians and more than 250 different kinds of birds, making it a birder (and hiker) heaven.
Ramsey Canyon, with its many trails starting at the Nature Conservancy Preserve, is one of Southern Arizona Sky Islands. High canyon walls, a stream, and elevation come together to create an oasis of water loving trees and birds. For those craving a less strenuous visit to the area, there are trails < 3 miles to give a taste of this wonderful place. Those folks looking for a heart thumping day can do some or part of an 11 mile, 3000 ft elevation gain loop to the crest area of the Huachucas.
