The Huckaby Trail is located within the beautiful inner gorge of Oak Creek
Canyon and runs for three miles between Schnebly Hill and Midgley Bridge.
Because of very limited parking at the Midgley Bridge Trailhead, we will
hike in from the Schnebly Hill end. The club has not done this hike since
June, 2004, and April is an ideal time for hiking in the Sedona area. So
put on your hiking boots and join us for a terrific hike in Red Rock Country.
Built in 1998, Huckaby is one of the newer trails in the Sedona trail system.
Shortly after the junction with Marg’s Draw Trail at about 0.3 miles,
the trail begins descending steeply on an old Jeep road. At 0.5 miles the
trail crosses Bear Wallow Canyon and starts climbing again to the one mile
point. Around 1.5 miles the trail drops down to creek level and continues
north along the east bank of Oak Creek. Close to the Midgley Bridge Trailhead
the trail crosses the creek on a narrow footbridge and then winds its way up
under the bridge to the trailhead. We will turn back here and have lunch
somewhere along the creek before heading back to the Schnebly Hill Trailhead.
The Huckaby Trail has a bit of everything — a series of moderate
uphill and downhill sections, a path which changes from dirt/gravel to
rocky to slickrock to sand, both sunny and shady sections, great views of
the surrounding mountains, red rock formations, and downtown Sedona, as
well as beautiful Oak Creek.
Required:

Take I-17 north past Camp Verde to SR 179 (Exit 298). We will stop at
the Ranger Station on the east side of SR 179 just before the Village of
Oak Creek for our Red Rock passes. From there, we will continue heading
north on SR 179 and turn right onto Schnebly Hill Road (FR 153), which
is 0.3 miles south of the T-junction with SR 89A. Drive east about one
mile to the trailhead parking on the left. Restroom facilities are
located at both the Ranger Station and the trailhead.
