Grand Canyon Rim Day Hike

the hikes     2 day hikes, one in morning and one in afternoon Friday September 19. Meet in the Bright Angel Lodge Lobby at 7:30am for hike towards Hermits Rest and 1:30 pm for the hike from Mather Point back to the Bright Angel Lodge are the planned start times. Friday at 7:30am we will walk west (4.2 miles total) along the GC Rim trail to Mohave Point, 3 miles with stops for photos at Bright Angel Trail view overlook (to see where we will be going down in the dark early Saturday morning for the rafters), on To Maricopa Point, Powell Point, Hopi point and stopping at Mohave point to get on the free res shuttle west to Monument Creek Vista to look at the Colorado River far below. Back on the next shuttle to Pima Point and off to hike 1.1 miles west to Hermits rest. Snack bar break - sandwiches, chips, ice cream, and hot chocolate. But do not leave before sampling one of the freshly baked signature cookies. After break get on the red shuttle east to Village route transfer 0.1 miles west from Bright Angel lodge. For the afternoon meet at 1:30pm in the Bright Angel Lodge lobby and we will walk to the blue Village shuttle stop SE of the lodge. Taking the blue shuttle to the Grand Canyon Visitor Center. Walk to the visitor center for a brief look around (10 minutes) and restroom break. The walk northwest 0.1 miles following signs to Mather Point (where hundreds of people are taking photos) then walk west on the rim trail 0.7 miles to Yavapai Point and Geology Museum and a view of the Colorado River, water/bathroom break, walk 1.9 miles more down than up to Verkamps visitor center/museum, next Hopi House for the Mary Colter architecture and Indian artwork, rugs and jewelry. Can then visit El Tovar Hotel, and then 0.25 miles to BA Lodge. 3 miles total. Option to turn around at any point on either hike. Each hike is to be completed as an individual effort based on your start time, your hiking ability and the trails you use. Contact Leader for trail recommendations. Required:
•  Sturdy hiking boots
•  At least 2 liters of water, some trails have water stations
•  Rain poncho and a flannel shirt or light jacket
•  Hat, sunblock, sunglasses
•  Lunch or snacks
Recommended:
•  Hiking poles
•  Camera

time 4-6 hours hiking time.

The club also allows voluntary contributions of $5 per non-member.

•  Take I-17 north to Flagstaff.
From Flagstaff, go west on I - 40 to AZ 64
Continue AZ 64 into the park. The hotels are on the first paved left turn off AZ 64 (Center Rd).
Watch for sign to hotel (Bright Angel Lodge). It has a small parking lot.
Just down hill from Bright Angel Lodge is the Backcountry Information Center with a large lot.
