There is a large and prominent outcrop below, and just south of, Superstition Peak.
It is named Turk’s head.
It is located along the Lost Goldmine Trail, about two miles east of the
Cloudview Trailhead.
This promontory is visible from many miles distant, and may be clearly seen from
Apache Junction while driving east on the US 60/ Superstition Highway.
It rises to an elevation of 2822', approximately 800' above the surrounding terrain.
This trek will be for the purpose of scaling Turk’s Head Peak.
This hike starts at the Cloudview Trailhead, and proceeds east along the Lost Goldmine trail. After a little over 2 miles, the track heads north, off trail, and the ascent of Turk’s head soon thereafter begins. This hike has been described as a good training hike in preparation for climbing Picketpost or Pichacho Peak. While not a cakewalk, climbing Turk’s Head is not as demanding or difficult or precarious as either of these other two hikes. It provides one a good opportunity to acquire some practice at boulder hopping and scrambling on incline over some rocky stretches. Gloves, hiking poles, and long pants would be a good idea, and at least 2 liters of water are required. On reaching the top, we’ll take a break and enjoy the great view, have some snacks, contemplate the new year, and then return down and head back the way we came. We may want to do a little exploring of the canyon to the north of Turk's, before returning to the trailhead. |

• US 60 / Superstition Freeway east to Gold Canyon, AZ. • Turn left on Kings Ranch Rd. • 2.9 miles, turn right on Baseline Ave. • 0.2 mile, turn left on Mohican Rd. • 0.4 mile, turn left on E. Valley View Dr. (becomes S. White Tail Rd.). • 0.5 mile, turn right on Cloudview Ave. • Continue 0.4 mile east to Cloudview Trailhead (road dead ends). |
