where Mogollon Rim – See Canyon / Christopher Creek
the hike     If you would like to escape the triple digits of the desert only for a day, please join us in Mogollon Rim country for the See Canyon hike.
The first two miles of the See Canyon Trail are relatively easy, crisscrossing Christopher Creek several times as it heads north to the Rim. Shade is plentiful along the creek, thanks to a dense forest cover of pine, bigtooth maple, box elder, velvet ash, and Gambel oak, as well as aspens near the top of the trail.
Two miles in the trail begins a steep climb to the top of Mogollon Rim and FR 300 (the Rim Road) and becomes a little less defined as it nears the top. We’ll stop for a lunch break at the top of the trail along the Rim. Come prepared for several wet creek crossings. After lunch, if we have enough time and energy, we may opt to check out the spur trail to See Spring on the way back to the trailhead.

meet 5:30 AM in the parking lot of the Target Center on the south side of Shea Blvd., about a mile west of Highway 87 (Beeline). For those leaving their cars behind, please park up against the north curb away from Target. We will leave promptly at 5:45 AM.
drive
•  Take Highway 87 to Payson. We’ll meet at the McDonald’s at Highway 87 & 260 and caravan from there.
From Payson drive Highway 260 east for about 20 miles toward Christopher Creek.
Turn left at the signed Christopher Creek Loop and watch for the Fire Department on your left.
Shortly after the Fire Department, watch for the Tall Pines Market on your right.
FR 284 begins directly across the road from the Tall Pines Market and gas station. This road is normally suitable for all vehicles, but high clearance is recommended for the rocky stretches of road where all the dirt and gravel have washed away.
Make a left onto FR 284 and drive for about 1.5 miles and watch for the See Canyon Trailhead sign on the right.
Park in the large dirt parking lot near the restroom and trailhead sign. The See Canyon Trail starts from here.
