Buena Vista Day Hike

South Mountain

November 20, 2004

by Joe Michalides

Joyce, Beth and Emie were the hike participants. The weather was beautiful, short sleeves and shorts were perfect. There were a lot of people, mountain bikers and dogs the first 30 minutes of the hike while on the road. After we crossed Pima Wash and started uphill there were no dogs and a few mountain bikers. We managed to stay ahead of a large group of school age children with their parents. Emie and Beth were able to make it through Fat Man's Pass.

After leaving Hidden Canyon and continuing on to Buena Vista we saw few people or bikers. We stopped just short of the parking lot at Buena Vista to have lunch along the trail. Once at the parking lot Beth continued on uphill to the highest point.

After a 30-45 minute rest (with no rest for Beth) we did the return trip, this time staying on the National Trail all the way back, bypassing Hidden Canyon. We got back to the cars around 4:00 PM. Turns out the binoculars were not much help as there was a brown haze over Phoenix.
