where Superstition Wilderness
the hike     This scenic off-trail trek will take us from Tortilla Trailhead to Mesquite Flat, following a smooth ridge most of the way as we parallel a tributary of Mesquite Creek. Enjoy miles of expansive views of the Mazatzals and Superstitions before bailing out to a creekbed lined with cobblestones, leading to an abandoned road. Come prepared for gorgeous slickrock terrain, steep and rocky slopes, cliffs, dropoffs, and prickly brush aplenty. Gloves and cameras recommended.
This hike is described in Footloose from Phoenix by Ted Tenny, pages 99-103.
