MORNING hike ON Hau’ Pal and Alta Trails Loop Day Hike

where South Mountain Park
the hike     It will be a loop hike at the west end of South Mountain Park. This is the first in a series of hikes I’m leading to prepare for hiking into and more important out of the Grand Canyon. Consequently, over the next few weeks, the hikes will be increasing in length and elevation gain. This hike will start on the Hau’ Pal Trail, gaining 950’ in 1.3 miles to the Ma-Ha Tauk ridgeline. We then hike west a short distance through rocky terrain to a connector trail to the Alta Trail. We descend 728’ in 1.5 miles to the start of the Alta Trail where we turn around and regain the 728’ feet we just lost. Upon reaching the Ma-Ha Tauk ridgeline, we head east for one mile, gaining another 127’ before we turn west and gradually descend back to the parking lot where we started. Expect beautiful desert terrain in subtle fall colors, expansive views of the South and Estrella Mountains and of the city below. Required:

•  Go to Baseline Road and 19th Ave.
Go south on 19th Ave and continue on into South Mountain Park. Park at end of road.
