where Mazatzal Mountains
the hike     This hike crosses the midpoint of the Arizona Trail which is 405 miles to Utah and 405 miles to Mexico. The hike starts on the Cross F Trail and joins the Arizona Trail in less than 0.5 miles. This part is through a cottonwood and sycamore forest to the Mormon Grove.
We will be hiking on the Arizona Trail in the Mazatzal Mountains. With the temperature cooling down we can hike closer to Phoenix. The route starts off in a riparian area with sycamore trees that may be changing color. We will be walking along the Cross F Creek that will lead us to the Arizona Trail. The creek could have water, so we will have to watch our feet. The creek area has willows, sycamores and cottonwood trees. At this point the hike changes to going through the open desert. This is one of the spots where people could get lost, so we will make sure everyone turns north on the Arizona Trail here.
When we reach the trail that cuts over to the Mormon Grove we will take that. We will find a good spot for lunch somewhere on this segment of the Arizona Trail. The grove should have been save from the fire.
Oct 7, 2023 is Arizona Trail Day, so the Trailblazer will be doing this segment for the AZT.
The weather may be sunny or not. Be prepared for extreme desert weather. Bring a hat, sunscreen and some rain gear.
