Arizona Trailblazers Hiking Club
100 year Route 66, Holbrook
March 27-29, 2026

Route 66 is 100 years old in 2026, so let see some of it.

Friday, March 27

Drive to Two Guns exit and park north of the freeway. This is an old stop on Route 66. It had gas station, zoo, cave and other stuff. The zoo is way to small in todays world. The total zoo is the size of just one cage in todays world. This is our first stop, a walk around the old town of Two Guns. We then walk for a short distance to the cave, but we do not go in. When I was there the entrance was a walk along a cliff and I am sure the wood planks are in bad shape now.

We will then hike / drive to the old town of Diablo. How good the old road is will determine how far we drive to Diablo. Which according to some stories Hermann Wolf is the only person to die a natural death in the town. We can then view Canyon Diablo railroad bridge. Both the old and new bridge. View Hermann Wolf grave.

We then contine to Winslow and check out the corner. After the corner we contine to our hotels in Holbrook. Or you can stay in the hotels in Winslow.

Saturday, March 28

We will speand all day hiking in Petrified Forest. There are many trails, but no shade. Please note that the roads in Petrified Forest are Route 66. All our trails this day will be in the north of Petrified Forest. We will stop at the north Museum to leave one car. We will then contine nort to the Petrified Forest Inn and leave our car here and hike the Painted Desert Trail back to the Museum. While we are getting the cars back, the other can start going thought the Museum. We will conitue south to US 180 to get back to Holbrook. Because we are doing multiple trails we can leave water and snacks/ lunch in the cars.

Sunday, March 29

Check out of the hotel. We will do a half day in Petrified Forest and then return home. We will use US 180 to get back to the Petrified Forest. We will exit out of Petrified Forest using the north exit. We will exit to I-40 to get back to Phoenix.
