Mogollon Rim Camping Trip
September 25-27, 2009

Trip Leaders: Debbie M and Wendy R. Please email or phone at 480-567-2728
by September 12 to reserve your spot. This trip is limited to 16 people, so reserve early.

FIRST COME – FIRST SERVED!
General Description: The Mogollon Rim, located in the Tonto, Coconino, and Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests, boasts numerous campgrounds on the stretch between Payson and Heber. Canyon Point is reputed to be one of the best. Offering a welcome respite from the high summer temperatures, this weekend retreat will include several hiking opportunities, some sightseeing, potluck dinner, nearby lakes for fishing or boating, and lots of relaxation at a beautiful campground.
Cost: $20.00 per vehicle at each camp site per night. Limit of two vehicles and eight individuals per campsite. It really makes sense to carpool! I would like to see 3 or 4 people per vehicle if possible. Cost will be shared among all persons at each campsite.
Weather conditions: Heber
Although it is hard to predict the weather, average daytime temperatures are in the mid 70s, nights in the low 40s. Always be prepared for cold nights.
Campsite: Canyon Point campground sits at 7680 feet elevation and has 88 camp sites. TENTS ONLY. Reservations are not available after September 13. It is FIRST COME FIRST SERVED and there is NO GUARANTEE that you will find a site. Wendy and Debbie plan on driving up Thursday, September 24, to secure two adjacent campsites. The individual sites seem more suited to our purposes so we will not be at a group site. If the campground is full on Thursday (unlikely), we will try an alternate campground in the area. Identify yourself as a Trailblazer with the camp host and look for signs directing you to Arizona Trailblazers Sites. I need to know when you will be arriving so I know when to expect you. Check in time is 2:00 PM. Check out time is 1:00 PM.

There is drinking water at the campsite, as well as tables and grills. Firewood is available for $6. Restrooms have running water; there are showers available for $5. I did not see any bear boxes at the camp so plan on storing your food in the vehicles on account of bears.

Dogs are not allowed.
Directions: Take Route 87 (Beeline Highway) north to Payson. Turn right at Rt. 260 and head east towards Heber. Canyon Point Campground is located at milepost 287 (about 31 miles). The campground entrance is 4.5 miles east of the Visitor’s Center on the right.

Agenda/Hikes:
  • Hikes: Horton Springs is currently the posted hike for Saturday. We are researching other hikes in the area. There is also a short one mile hike down to the Sinkhole by the campground.

  • The Fish Hatchery is nearby and will give us a group tour. The Babe Haught hike is located near the hatchery.

  • Willow Springs Lake and Woods Canyon Lake are a short drive away and offer boating and fishing possibilities. There is a general store at Woods Canyon Lake.

  • Meals: Since there is always plenty of good food to go around, let’s try sharing a potluck on both Friday and Saturday nights. Please bring a main dish, side, or dessert to share: we’ll bring the leftovers out on Saturday You are on your own for the rest of your meals. Campfires are restricted to fire rings and grills only. You may bring firewood or purchase at the campsite for $6.00.
